Borland Delphi 6, Borland Delphi 2007 & Borland Database Engine on 64 bit Windows 7

Borland Delphi 6, Borland Delphi 2007 and the Borland Database Engine (BDE) were released before there was any 64 bit system including Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit. desiderata.com blogged about how to tweak the Windows 7 64 bit default installation to get Delphi 6, Delphi 2007 and the Borland Database Engine (DBE) run.

The main problem are the location of the System32 files and the registry. Here is a overview how to get the older Borland Delphi and Borland Database Engine run:

  • Do not install the programs to C:\Program Files\
  • Do not try to write files to protected Windows folders
  • Registry preferences should be stored in HKCU
  • Work as an admin requested in the manifest XML file (link to guide)
  • Work with a Theme Manager to enable Windows XP themes (for example the stardock theme manager)
